Which Ring Size Should I Buy?

Tuesday, 3rd November 2009

It's a common problem that people face when buying an engagement ring. You might be ready to propose, but how do you decide what engagement ring size to buy? Here are four approaches you might choose to use so that you can find out her engagement ring size without her knowing.

1.) The easiest way to tell is if she already has a ring that fits her third finger. If it's one she does not wear very often, you can just take it with you to the jeweller. Otherwise, trace around the inside of the ring onto a piece of paper. The jeweller will be able to work it out from there.

2.) You may also be able to take a piece of paper or string and wrap it around her third finger whilst she is asleep. Make sure that you mark where the two ends overlap.

3.) Alternatively you could just ask one of her closest friends; sometimes women try on each other's jewellery, or have bought jewellery for one another in the past. Just make sure the friend you choose is one that can keep a secret!

4.) If all else fails, try to estimate how much bigger or smaller your hands are than hers. The jeweller can always give you an approximate size and most retailers will give you the opportunity to swap a ring for the correct size once you have purchased one.

Once you think you have the best size ring, remember that fingers change size according to temperature, time of day, and even humidity. For the best fit, ask her to try the ring on at room temperature (not after showering, being outdoors in the winter, vigorous exercise, etc.) and toward the end of the day (when the fingers are typically largest).
